A person not appreciative of the good life he is living is one who has forgotten his past miseries. A person in good health is not aware of its blessings until he loses it.

(This is a translation of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III Wan Ko Yeshe Norbu’s philosophical sayings about worldly matters originally written in Chinese.)

Below is not an official translation, just for reference.

Some people do not cherish their life when they are lucky. Although the conditions are good in all aspects, they still feel unsatisfactory here, unsatisfactory there, full of complaints, and self-sorrowful. This is because people mainly think only of happy times and forget past adversity.

When you are happy, forget the difficulties you have experienced. Just as strong people often don’t know the pain before being sick, they don’t pay attention to protecting their health and don’t cherish their strong bodies. Once he is sick, lying on the bed, unable to move, not wanting to eat, only then does he know the happiness and happiness of health.
