A virtuous man does not hesitate to acknowledge his errors and seeks ways to correct them. A selfish person often tries to whitewash his wrongdoing with lame excuses. He does so because his selfish motives leave him with nothing but such excuses.

(This is a translation of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III Wan Ko Yeshe Norbu’s philosophical sayings about worldly matters originally written in Chinese.)

Below is not an official translation, just for reference

A virtuous man is often willing to publicly acknowledge and correct their shortcomings, constantly and actively checking for their mistakes. In contrast, a petty person driven by selfish desires often spreads rumors, makes unreasonable arguments, and seeks all sorts of ways to undermine others. Why is this the case? It's because the reasons they use to justify their actions are not actually valid; the3y are merely attempts to obscure their own selfish and greedy inner nature.
