Unworthy knowledge will never bring out lofty ideas, and vulgarness tends to generate wickedness, which is often displayed in the form of envy. But envy hurts no one but its originator, for the resentment it breeds always backfires.
(This is a translation of H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III Wan Ko Yeshe Norbu’s philosophical sayings about worldly matters originally written in Chinese.)
Below is not an official translation, just for reference
Vulgar knowledge fails to reach the profound realms of theory, meaning that its thoughts do not ascend to the level of true mastery. The realm of being low-class and vulgar often gives rise to evil perceptions, characterized by evil views and misguided knowledge. Those with such evil views mostly harbor envy in their hearts, directed towards others and their achievements. In reality, these individuals harm themselves, as envy is their inherent adversary. The mindset they cultivate does not harm others; instead, it intensifies their own suffering. Consequently, their suffering originates from within, caused by jealousy and malevolent thoughts. For this reason, envy is one's own enemy rather than someone else's. Understanding this principle, we should refrain from cultivating feelings of envy.
